The Office of the Vice President for Communications and Marketing is the central Communications and Marketing unit (UCM) at Indiana University (IU), which leads university-wide communications efforts with workstreams ranging from internal communication to issues management, media relations, research communication and storytelling, social media, state impact communication and executive communication. UCM’s functions also include supporting communications and marketing for the IU Kelley School of Business, which provides top-tier business education to students through undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and executive programs on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campus – including the Physician MBA and Evening MBA programs – as well as online through its number 1 ranked online MBA program. The school’s success is reflected in its reputation among academic peers, its career placement statistics, and the accomplishments of more than 130,000 living alumni around the globe.

Job Summary

As a member of the communications team serving the Kelley School of Business in the Office of the IU Vice President of Communications and Marketing, this individual will help advance the mission of the Kelley School in Indianapolis through written content that elevates its visibility and reputation, with a particular focus on topics that align with campus and university priorities.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

Writes, edits, publishes, and distributes clear, informative written content on topics of strategic importance to the Kelley School in Indianapolis in alignment with school and university-level priorities with a particular emphasis on blog content and thought leadership writing.
Consults with stakeholders, including Kelley Indianapolis faculty and colleagues within UCM, to identity communications priorities and develop communication strategies and tactics that advance desired outcomes.
Identifies and pitches opportunities for media placement, develops and advances relationships with members of the media, assists in crafting news releases and media advisories.
Regularly provides information to, and consults with, Kelley faculty, staff, and other stakeholders regarding university affairs, initiatives, programs, and activities; escalates complex or urgent issues to higher-level Communications Generalists or Public Relations Specialists, and/or manager as needed.
Schedules and attends meetings, consultations, publicity/press events, and various outreach activities.
May also perform administrative duties, such as maintaining photo databases and managing media contact lists.

General Responsibilities

Independently creates basic and complex communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Generalists.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or a related field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
