SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the state’s capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.
SVCC is currently seeking applicants for the position of Grants Officer. The successful candidate will serve to advance the college’s interests externally, build a culture of philanthropy within the college, and secure resources required for the college’s strategic initiatives. The Grants Specialist is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of raising support from foundations, corporations, and government sources requiring proposals for unrestricted operating revenue and restricted projects.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Works with College administration and the Director of Institutional Advancement to elevate future financial needs and goals of the college
Research grant-making prospects in public and private sectors (to include state and federal granters). Monitor grant-making field for opportunities
Develop and expand relationships with grant funders, including meetings, phone calls, and other relationship building activities
Enlist staff and faculty as active partners in proposal development Assist faculty in responding to grant opportunities
Complete and submit all grant proposals including developing case documents, supporting data, compelling grant narratives, budgets, timelines, etc.
Provide donors with superior stewardship and customer service
Prepare reports on progress, budgets, expenditures, etc., related to the management of grants activities
Work with Foundation staff on the planning and execution of Foundation and college events
Seek peer input and research tools that would enhance the Foundation’s ability to research and identify funding prospects
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of current trends in fundraising along with best practices for grants programs
Knowledge of effective grant research, writing and reporting principles and techniques
Knowledge of sources for identifying external funding sources and demonstrated ability to leverage sources for successful grant awards
Demonstrated ability to interpret government regulations and proposal guidelines and to match funding opportunities to college priorities
Skill in design, writing and editing complex grant documents, graphics, tables, budget timelines and reports.
Ability to anticipate, understand and respond to the needs of funders and to exceed their expectations within organization parameters.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a varied constituency, fostering teamwork, building relationships, resolving problems and enhancing organizational effectiveness.
Experience developing and implementing strategic grants plan
Experience in managing others
Knowledge of service area
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Excellent proofreading and editing skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Additional Considerations:
Prior community college experience preferred
Experience with support services in an academic environment
