Assistant Director of Social Media – Gies College of Business

The Office of Marketing and Communications at the University of Illinois’ Gies College of Business acts as an in-house marketing agency, partnering with and supporting units across the College. Our growing team of 30 plus professionals plays a pivotal role in helping the college shape purposeful leaders through life-changing access to education, research, and innovation. Creativity, strategy, and collaboration are key to our team’s success as we grow the reputation and brand of Gies Business, a Top 10 public business school with more than 9,000 residential and online students and 80,000 alumni across the world. All members of the Gies MarCom team contribute to the management and growth of the Gies brand.
Job Summary
This role is responsible for creating and executing the college’s social media strategy. This includes overseeing policy development, establishing best practices, and providing guidance to college partners. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams to create a best-in-class social media presence.
Duties & Responsibilities
Social media management
Develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy that aligns with the college’s purpose, commitments, and beliefs.
Continually collaborate with leaders across the marketing and communications team to ensure that social media efforts are supportive of and coordinated with specific marketing and communications goals.
Ensure that all social media efforts align with the college and campus brand.
Create and maintain a content calendar and share across the marketing and communications team to ensure consistent and timely posting across all platforms.
Create, curate, and manage engaging content for all social media platforms. These may include TikTok, Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more.
Establish relationships with faculty, staff, students, and alumni to capture and share stories that exemplify the Gies experience.
Coordinate with departments and other units across the college to generate content that highlights academic programs, events, student life, alumni achievements, and community partnerships.
Develop strategies to increase social media engagement with key audiences.
Provide guidance and training to faculty, staff, and student organizations on best practices for using social media.
Work within and contribute to team project management systems.
Recruit, hire, train, and manage staff and student employees as needed.
Other communications and marketing duties as assigned.
Social media tracking and monitoring
Utilize data analytics and statistics to measure impact of messaging on college social media platforms.
Research and identify social trends and make strategic recommendations to leadership team; implement them on social media platforms.
Monitor social media platforms for potential issues and risks to reputation, community safety, or other critical university missions and advise team leadership on appropriate mitigation actions and strategies.
Monitor competitor social media accounts and trends in higher education social usage.
Stay informed about emerging platforms to keep the college’s social media presence innovative and relevant.
Prepare regular reports on social media activities, including audience growth, engagement metrics, and campaign outcomes.
Use data-driven insights to inform future social media strategies and optimize content.
Specialty Factors
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
Five (5) year (60 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.
Demonstrated experience in content creation for digital platforms.
Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms in a professional environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years of experience with content creation for digital platforms.
Two years of experience managing social media in a professional environment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask, and work in a team environment as well as work independently.
A passion for education and a genuine interest in promoting the College’s mission.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with designers, writers, videographers, and other marketing positions.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage projects.
Superb interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to foster positive relationships and facilitate collaboration.
Experience with multimedia creation tools, as well as word processing, data management and presentation design software.
Experience working professionally with X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and other social media platforms.
Experience with data analysis and engagement tracking in digital environments.
Proficiency in social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Sprout Social) and analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics).
Demonstrated writing and communication skills as well as broad, general knowledge of higher education and an understanding of the Urbana-Champaign campus academic and administrative structure.
Knowledge of SEO, content marketing, and digital advertising.
Ability to foster and contribute to a culture of diversity and inclusion.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 – Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for the position is $60,000 to $70,000. This position requires in‐person work and is eligible for a hybrid schedule, with the ratio of weekly in‐office and work‐from‐home days to be determined by the supervisor. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. A path for professional growth is embedded in this and every position in the Gies Office of Marketing and Communications.
