About the Milken Institute Center for Advancing the American Dream

The Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD) at the Milken Institute seeks a seasoned public program professional to join the team as an Associate Director of Public Programs. When the center opens in 2025, this position will provide public programming and community engagement.

Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD), the newest center within the Institute, is catalyzing this work by building a new type of cultural center in the heart of Washington, DC. At MCAAD we celebrate the ideal of the American Dream and explore the ongoing challenges people face in pursuing opportunity, through exhibitions and programs. To accomplish this, we focus on four pillars of the American Dream: education, health, finance, and entrepreneurship. MCAAD’s physical home, with a planned opening in 2025, is a remarkable renovation of several 120-year-old historic bank buildings, including Riggs Bank, known as the “Bank of Presidents.” The Center’s main halls are in the National Register of Historic Places, and our stewardship of the property—along with adjacent buildings on 15th St NW—will showcase and honor the history of these buildings while adapting them for use as a modern cultural center with immersive exhibition galleries. There will also be a state-of-the-art theater, events and lecture spaces, a holodeck experience, store and an atrium with café. The six-building complex featuring nearly 300,000 square feet of space will also include a conference center, recording and broadcast studios, and the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the Milken Institute.

About the Position

The incumbent will report to the Director of Marketing and Communications with a dotted line to the Director of Digital Strategy.

Responsibilities

Content Planning and Creation
The Senior Associate for Social Media researches, develops and creates content for social media platforms to promote and engage audiences. The work includes writing and editing, creating and art directing some video and visual assets for paid and organic social media posts. Qualified candidates will transform information from MCAAD exhibitions and programs into suitable content for social media formats and audiences. They should expect that the role will also contribute to and update digital archives of evergreen social content. Drafts alt text captions, visual descriptions another accessibility components for social media posts an assets. Assists in developing and maintaining a social media editorial calendar to proactively promote content. Works with the digital strategy and communications colleagues to contribute to social media strategy, tactics, campaigns, reports and plans. Contributes to social media toolkits and outreach tactics for collaborators, influencers/social media ambassadors and other individuals and organizations. Builds relationships across departments to facilitate content generation and story development for social media campaigns. By liaising with content experts and key teams. Creates social media plans as needed. Works closely with Milken Institute social media team to collaborate on individual content or campaigns.

Social Media Listening and Reporting
Monitors social media platforms for the center (e.g. Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn) for brand reputation and key issues in coordination with colleagues and the Milken Institute team. Maintains awareness of other cultural institution social media landscape as well as moments to identify collaborations and cross-pollinated content. Monitors and records social media metrics, contributing to updates, presentations, and reports. Monitors and researches trends and best practices in digital communications; makes recommendations on how to apply to the digital communications strategy. Contributes to internal communications within the center and Milken Institute to provide updates on content and audiences related to the unit’s social media efforts.

Customer Service and Community Management
Performs customer service and community management on social media platforms, including public and private/direct messages and the resource email account. Responds to questions and comments from users to promote engagement with our brand. Maintains and updates customer service language bank and internal contact list for answering questions from audience members. Understands and follows industry best practices regarding social media.

Requirements

You have a great sense of humor; You are a gifted storyteller and hold exemplary writing editing and content creation skills. On brand creativity on tight timelines doesn’t daunt you. You have a flair for memorable and exciting online experiences as well as a track record of successful social media campaigns.

Must have B.A. in a related field including 3-5 years of experience managing social media at a museum or public-facing cultural organization.

You have a knack to quickly develop positive working relationships, support colleagues, be flexible, and thrive in a fast-paced, creative environment.

Working Conditions & Travel Requirements

This position will work in a professional office environment on a hybrid schedule consisting of three (3) days per week reporting in-person to the Washington, DC office location (Tuesday – Thursday), with the remaining two (2) days working remotely. Please understand, this schedule is subject to change at the Institute’s sole discretion.

This person will also be required to travel occasionally to other offices and/or venues to assist with events as needed, requiring occasional work outside of traditional hours. Domestic travel is possible. Additionally, this position requires interacting virtually on a regular basis with Milken Institute staff based in other locations in the United States and around the world.
