The Public Information Officer (PIO) role at the Port of New Orleans is responsible for coordinating communication efforts for the executive office, ensuring effective dissemination of information to the public and stakeholders. This position requires a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to manage complex communication tasks across various platforms. The PIO will work closely with senior leadership and community partners to enhance public understanding of the Port’s operations and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in public relations, journalism, marketing, content creation, social media management, or graphic design; OR

Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR

A bachelor’s degree.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER 1, 2, or 3

The Public Information Officer, under the direct supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, requires the ability to anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions to problems with a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and political acumen. The Public Information Officer coordinates all communication efforts for the CEO’s office.

This position will work collaboratively with the Board of Commissioners (Board), Port Authorities, Senior Executive Staff, and other Management to inform and educate the Public, Community Partners, Stakeholders and other Governmental agencies through a variety of communications, conferences, meetings, community engagement and public relations activities. Incumbents will perform a variety of professional public information and communications work. This Public Information Officer position will, on occasion, require non-traditional work hours, on an as needed basis, including evenings and/or weekends on short deadlines for certain assignments, with or without advance notice.

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned.

40% Deliver Information
Answers inquiries from the public on operations; prepares correspondence in reply to inquiries, general complaints, and suggestions relative to the Port’s regulatory programs and activities, consults with appropriate staff members to secure pertinent facts and information.
Prepares or coordinates the development of communications content across multiple platforms ensuring accurate and consistent messaging, branding, and alignment to the CEO’s specifications.
Provides information to the media and the public that is intended to inform the various entities with current business updates at the Port of New Orleans.
Designs and presents films, slide shows, and other audio-visual programs and operates related equipment for meetings, seminars, and conferences.

20% Prepare Materials
Prepares reports for CEO and senior leaders on business activities, developments, and trends regarding Port of New Orleans.
Prepares reports, studies, and Department documents; reviews technical documents and materials, prepares analyses and recommendations; keeps or provides direction in the keeping of files or other information of value to the CEO’s office.
Writes remarks, talking points, memos, and briefing materials that are of consistent high quality and appropriateness; ensures content of written materials is suitable and accurate through research and consultation with senior staff.
Respond to requests for information from various sources such as media, government officials, community members, and internal staff.
Develops public outreach materials, such as handbooks and flyers, Board materials and other messaging derived from the CEO’s office.

20% Develop Procedures
Implements system to ensure all public concerns, questions, or issues are actively addressed in a timely manner.
Develops and implements a communication strategy for the CEO’s office using it effectively as a roadmap for getting messages delivered to a targeted audience.
Serves on the emergency preparedness committee as designated essential personnel and assists in crisis management as directed by CEO and other senior leaders.
Leads the planning and coordination of special events as assigned by the CEO and/or other senior leadership.
Schedules interviews, meetings, and conferences between members of the organization and other stakeholders or groups.

15% Maintain Relationships
Establishes credible relationships with elected officials, board members, local and federal entities through communication and knowledge of Port of New Orleans’ mission.
Interacts with senior level Port staff, news media representatives, state representatives, and port organizations (both local and international) on issues relating to Port business activities with the CEO’s office.
Tasks with working with governmental affairs office for various agency events; responsible for the creation and setup of public displays, materials, or audio-visual needs.
