In this dynamic role, you will craft and implement strategies to enhance our visibility, engage supporters, and share the story of MSHI’s impact with the public. Working closely with our program staff, you’ll develop compelling content and manage a results-driven communications strategy across various platforms to connect with participants, donors, partners, and the broader community. The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller with strong digital marketing skills, a willingness to experiment with new ideas, and a passion for connecting people to science, education, and outdoor experiences.
POSITION DETAILS:
Title: Marketing & Communications Coordinator
Position type: Half-time (20 hours/week), hourly, non-exempt
Wages: Starting hourly rate between $23.99-$25.45; position is eligible for annual increase.
Benefits: Benefits include health insurance (100% employee, 50% spouse and dependents), Simple IRA retirement plan with 3% employer match, paid vacation with increased accrual based on years of continuous employment and paid sick leave.
Working hours: This is a half-time position with flexible Monday through Friday hours, required working hours on Thursdays, and occasional weekend and evening work.
Work Location: Hybrid role based at MSHI’s office in Amboy, WA, with monthly in-person staff meetings and occasional travel throughout SW Washington.
Reports to: Development & Community Engagement Director

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communications (30%)
Coordinate stakeholder communications, ensuring clear and engaging updates through newsletters, social media, and other outreach. Craft messages to keep donors, supporters, and stakeholders informed and engaged with the organization’s activities and impact.
Support organizational fundraising efforts and donor stewardship with effective messaging and timely, personalized acknowledgments.
Represent MSHI at community events to enhance visibility and engagement.
Produce and distribute press releases to local and regional media outlets
Develop and distribute MSHI’s annual report.
Capture and share compelling stories that highlight MSHI’s programs, events, and participant experiences to engage and inform our audience.
Digital Media (35%)
Develop and moderate engaging, high-quality content for MSHI’s website and social media platforms, incorporating SEO best practices to improve search visibility and engagement.
Oversee and enhance MSHI’s website, ensuring up-to-date and relevant content.
Implement and analyze social media strategies, engaging with audiences across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and emerging platforms.
Manage digital media assets to support content creation and organization.
Marketing (25%)
Promote MSHI events, programs, and initiatives through targeted marketing efforts
Develop and execute organizational marketing strategy
Ensure brand consistency across all communications, maintaining a strong, unified voice and image
Design, maintain, and track Google Ads performance and search engine rankings, optimizing ads for maximum reach and conversion.
Track and analyze engagement metrics across communications, digital media, and marketing efforts. Use data insights to refine strategies, improve outreach, and optimize content performance across platforms.
Staff and organizational relations (10%):
Attend regular staff meetings and occasional in-person programs and events.
Understand MSHI’s mission, vision, values and programs.
Build relationships with staff members; Collaborate with staff across departments to support communications and marketing initiatives.
Support organizational events as assigned.
Other duties may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
This position demands a diverse and dynamic skill set. A successful candidate will possess the technical, organizational, and interpersonal skills to effectively connect with our constituents, and an appreciation for the unique place and meaning of Mount St. Helens.
Enthusiasm for the mission of the Mount St. Helens Institute.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and environmental justice, and an understanding of the experiences and barriers affecting people marginalized in science and outdoor recreation.
At least two years of experience in marketing, communications, or a related field.
Curiosity and enthusiasm for science communication, and sharing the unique stories of Mount St. Helens.
Proficiency in digital marketing best practices, including social media management, website maintenance, and content creation.
Experience using Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, graphic design tools (i.e. Canva), and social media management tools; preferred experience with Meta Business Suite, Google Ads, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Strong writing, editing, and design skills with an eye for detail.
Innovative, proactive, creative, and team-oriented approach to work.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
A valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and access to a vehicle for travel around SW Washington.
Ability to transport and lift event supplies of up to 20 lbs.

LOCATION: This position’s assigned workstation is at MSHI’s headquarters in Amboy, Washington, though flexibility and frequent teleworking are part of MSHI’s culture. Amboy is a rural community approximately 40-60 minutes from Vancouver/Portland. Attendance at monthly in-person staff meetings and occasional travel within SW Washington are required.
