Reports To: Public Relations Director *This is a Bargaining Unit position.

Position Overview

Through the general supervision of the Public Relations Director, the Public Relations Specialist has primary responsibility for producing and overseeing the production of printed and digital promotional materials for the library. The PR Specialist must be able to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment, while at the same time work with various library teams from other departments in the creation of publicity materials.

The following competencies apply to this position based on designated responsibilities:

Accuracy – Double-checks the accuracy of information and work product to provide accurate and consistent work.
Technology – Proficient using design and photo-editing computer software, specifically InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
Print Design and Production – Proficient in design of a wide variety of printed materials. Understand the printing process and how to prepare files for a printer.
Digital graphics -Proficient at preparing graphics for social media, websites and email.
Creativity – Develop and execute original concepts that reinforce the DBRL brand.

Essential Duties:

Provide support and assistance to the Public Relations Director in regard to new and ongoing department projects.
Collaborate with the Public Relations Director in planning and executing marketing efforts.
Edit and design, multi-page event guide, brochures, exhibit materials, flyers, signs, bookmarks, newsletters, program support materials, imprinted items, promotional items and vehicle graphics. This includes working with individual staff members and committees throughout the system about their preferences.
Create visual content for multiple platforms in coordination with the PR Director, Social Media Specialist and Librarians.
Write and edit program descriptions and effectively publicize programs under the general supervision of the Public Relations Director.
In collaboration with the PR Director and PR team members, evaluate information gathered from secondary statistical marketing data from internal and external sources to inform PR/marketing efforts.
Become proficient in various SaaS (software as a service) platforms used by the library (i.e. events management system, email marketing system) for PR purposes and to be a resource and trainer for other staff on these systems.
Assist librarys web developer in design and content upkeep for public site and intranet, and may edit and write content for sites.
Oversee printing for library projects including requesting estimates, preparing purchase order requests, maintaining good working relationships with area printers, overseeing printing quality, organizing and tracking library systems print jobs.
Purchase and maintain supplies of paper, lamination film, foamcore, signage supplies and other key supplies for the department along with the PR Director.
May present programs and/or conduct training for staff and the public.
May help maintain department equipment including laminator, cutting machine, drill, paper folder, jogger and die cut machine.
May need to respond to media inquiries when the PR Director is unavailable.
Respond to occasional patron inquiries/requests.
Work independently on large library projects on behalf of the PR department.
May photograph library events, staff and patrons when staff photographer/videographer is unavailable. May oversee and art direct staged photo shoots for marketing purposes.
In coordination with the Public Relations Director, review work produced by PR Associates and/or PR Associate Videographer Photographer.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

There are no supervisory responsibilities.

Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Scheduling and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

Position requires standing or sitting for extended periods of time, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, and working on a computer.
Moderately quiet work environment.
All library employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Art, Journalism or related field. Experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for college credit. Proficient in using the graphic design-focused programs in Adobe Creative Suite.

Preferred Job Requirements:

Training and/or experience creating graphics for print, web and social media. Knowledge of digital photography/recording, Google Workspace, Quark and WordPress helpful.
