Role Responsibilities
Are you seeking an opportunity to use your diverse skills and creativity in a role that contributes to advancing human rights in our province? We currently have one temporary position for our Policy and Communication Consultant role.
As a Policy and Communication Consultant with the Alberta Human Rights Commission, you are an expert communicator and will use your exceptional communication skills to drive the Commission’s strategic communications efforts, leading initiatives to raise awareness of human rights and the Commission’s programs and services. In addition, you will support the Commission’s policy work, including providing strategic advice, drafting policy papers, and contributing to Alberta’s reporting on international human rights conventions and treaties.
Communication and marketing responsibilities include:
Developing strategies for internal and external communications that support organizational goals and priorities
Project management, including managing the Commission’s strategic communications framework
Promoting the Commission’s programs and services
Researching, writing, and editing diverse internal and external content for different audiences and channels that reflects the organization’s voice. This includes writing, editing, and contributing content to public statements, speeches, responses to public inquiries, educational publications, briefings, the annual report, newsletter, and website
Managing media relations, media monitoring, and risk/crisis communications
Planning, developing, monitoring, and overseeing all social media content and channels, including designing graphics, creating content, and responding to comments and questions from the public
Coordinating internal communications, including utilizing tools such as SharePoint online
Providing communications support to CEE’s policy, stakeholder engagement, and education programs, such as online learning, public workshops, and events
Managing special projects
Providing communications and marketing support to stakeholders for joint initiatives
Coordinating marketing efforts, such as attendance at events, promotional items, and digital marketing
Policy and research responsibilities include:
Providing input into Alberta’s progress on international human rights conventions and treaties
Policy analysis, including researching human rights issues, analyzing and reviewing policy options from other jurisdictions and organizations, and providing advice, recommendations, and policy options to senior leadership
Drafting policy papers on current human rights issues and policy responses within the organization, and reviewing legislation/policy from other areas of the Alberta Government
Issues management
The ideal candidate will possess:
Strong working knowledge of communications strategic planning, implementing communications initiatives, media relations, and social media
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Policy and research skills
Outstanding time and project management skills
Good knowledge of MS Office; proficiency with Adobe suites and Canva is an asset
