POSITION SUMMARY
The Communications and Public Relations Manager works with the Congregational Leadership Team to develop and implement strategic communications and public relations plan that highlights the Maryknoll Sisters brand identity, mission and values and responds to crisis events requiring communication.
Communicates the public face of the Maryknoll Sisters. This position prepares and submits material for print and online multimedia channels to promote the cross-cultural missionary purpose of the Maryknoll Sisters Congregation.
Collaborates with the Congregational Leadership Team (CLT), Development Director, and other Departments in achieving media and marketing goals and provides a vital link between the Sisters and related external organizations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, LISTED IN PRIORITY FUNCTION
Communications
· Collaborates with CLT and Development to oversee branding and strategy
· Drafts official public statements with the Congregational Leadership Team and
the Global Concerns Office. Responds to crisis situations as directed by the CLT.
· Manages all online/print ads for general Maryknoll Sisters promotions.
· Manages all Sister biographies-both online and print copies. Ensures biographies are up to date.
· Develops and implements the marketing of communications materials.
· Maintains the following Files:
-Individual Sisters’ General Mission History File
-Regional Newsletters File, Regional, World Section Minutes
-Office Files
-Files of Major Events in Maryknoll Sisters Congregational History
· Maintains Communications Bulletin Board for Center Sisters and posts relevant communiqués from Maryknoll Society and Maryknoll Lay Missioners.
· Maintains association with professional communication organizations and keeps abreast of news items pertaining to religious communities including but not limited to Catholic News Services (CNS), Catholic Press Association (CPA), National Communicators Network of Women Religious (NCNWR) and secular newspapers.
· Lead storytelling initiatives to share mission values and impact of the Maryknoll Sisters.
Public Relations:
· Build and maintain relationships with multi-channel media outlets, and influencers to secure positive coverage of the Maryknoll sisters and events.
· Is the point of contact regarding requests from outside journalists, authors, photographers, publishers and others who seek information about Maryknoll Sisters, is contact person for filmmakers producing documentaries involving Maryknoll Sisters; arranges schedules and facilitates interviews.
· Manages Public Relations Online Platform-Cision and creates and sends out all press releases relative to significant events and transitions in the life of Sisters and the Congregations, e.g. First Vows, Jubilees, Obituaries, etc.
· Collaborates with the Development Director on the communications section of the Development Department strategic work plan. Participates in committees relevant to public relations outreach. Attends quarterly meetings of the Outreach Cluster. Performs any related tasks as requested by the CLT liaisons and/or required for implementing the Department plan.
· Researches files (Sisters, Regional, Archives, Media Resources) and interviews Sisters in person, by email or telecommunications to prepare press releases and gather information for promotion.
BUDGET RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS POSITION
Plans and monitors the annual budget for the Communications Office in collaboration with the Congregational Leadership Team
REQUIREMENTS TO CARRY OUT ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
(a) Strong planning, organizational and collaborative skills.
(b) Ability to relate and work well with others.
(c) Experience with the multi-media market within North America.
(d) Competence in mass communications: e.g., journalism and public relations.
(e) A good command of the English language; ability to write clearly, accurately, relatively quickly, vividly, and with an appreciation of the intended audience; editing and proof- reading skills.
(f) Has a grasp of Maryknoll Sisters’ history, mission, charism and current realities; ability to do personal interviews, and to synthesize data obtained.
(g) Ability to work creatively, multi-task and meet deadlines.
(h) Proficient in Cision, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
(i) Ability to work in a team to establish and achieve the goals of the office.
(j) Ability to keep confidential sensitive material and work projects as necessary.
(k) Ability to collaborate with other Departments where operations interface.
(l) Willing to travel as needed.
(m) Physical Requirements representative of those needing to be successfully performed for essential functions of this job:
(1) stands and walks intermittently throughout the work day, including sitting and bending; reaching, lifting, carrying; manipulating various office materials, supplies and equipment; arranging furniture;
(2) must be able to lift up to 30 pounds
(3) must be able to sit for long intervals while working on the computer and other tasks;
(4) must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position;
(5) must be able to function independently;
(6) must be in good general health;
(7) work requires continuous activity and with frequent interruptions.
2. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Experience in communications/public relations.
Experience in management.
Experience working with Cision.
5-7 years minimum in a communications/public relations-related job.
3. MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED
Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Communications,
Journalism, Public Relations or Mass Media.
