Position Overview:
The Assistant Director of Communications plays a key role in shaping the organization’s public image, managing strategic content, and overseeing communication initiatives. This position is responsible for handling crisis communications, supporting grants and awards submissions, coordinating external events, leading public relations efforts, managing a communications team, and ensuring adherence to communication policies and procedures. The ideal candidate is a proactive communicator, stakeholder facilitator, and strategic thinker who can effectively engage diverse audiences.

The day-to-day responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Strategy
Delegate tasks effectively and provide guidance on messaging, branding, and public relations initiatives.
Foster a collaborative environment with team and all employees and stakeholders, offering professional development opportunities for team members.
Monitor team performance and support workflow efficiency to meet deadlines and project goals.
Developing and Implementing Communication Strategy
Develop a comprehensive communication strategy to enhance Universal Services public image, support business objectives, and maintain consistent messaging.
Create long-term communication goals that align with Universal Services vision.
Tailor strategies for specific audiences (internal teams, customers, investors, media).
Set measurable objectives to evaluate the impact of communications.
Crisis Communications
Develop and implement crisis communication strategies to manage and mitigate credibility risks.
Ensures timely and effective messaging is communicated to key leaders and staff.
Coordinate with leadership to draft crisis statements, talking points, and media responses.
Monitor and assess public perception, recommending proactive measures to uphold the organization’s reputation.
Grants and Awards
Provide support in identifying and applying for grants related to organizational projects and initiatives.
Assist in tracking deadlines and reporting requirements for awarded grants.
Support the submission of award applications to showcase organizational achievements.
Collaborate with internal teams to highlight funded projects and success stories.
Events Management
Plan and execute marketing for high-profile events and community engagement initiatives.
Oversee logistics, branding, and messaging to ensure cohesive event experiences.
Develop event communications, including press releases, social media promotions, and post-event reports.
Work closely with vendors, partners, and internal stakeholders to deliver successful events.
Public Relations Initiatives
Develop and execute PR campaigns that enhance the organization’s external visibility.
Build and maintain relationships with media outlets and social media leads.
Monitor media trends and proactively identify opportunities for targeted messaging.
Policies and Procedures
Establish and enforce communication guidelines, ensuring consistency in messaging and branding.
Maintain a crisis communication plan and train staff on best practices.
Oversee internal communications to ensure transparency and engagement within the organization.

Requirements

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
Experience:
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in communications, public relations, or a similar role.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience leading a communications team, managing workflow, and mentoring staff.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Proven expertise in crisis communications and media relations.
Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
Experience in event planning and public relations.
Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across teams.

Preferences

Education:
Master’s degree in a relevant field.
Experience:
10 years of experience in Communications, Public Relations, or similar role
Knowledge and Skills Preferred:
Working in nonprofit or government
Familiarity with digital communications, social media management, and content strategy.
Basic experience with grants, including researching opportunities and supporting applications

General Information

Location:
406 Caroline St., Houston, TX 77002
Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday/8 hours
Work Arrangement:
Onsite 5 days/week for first 90 days
Hybrid (4 days onsite, 1-day WFH) after successful completion of first 90 days

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
